Rinus VeeKay has been cleared to race in this weekend’s upcoming IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio by IndyCar’s medical team.

The young Dutchman was injured in a road cycling accident two weeks ago and broke his collarbone.  He was forced to miss the most recent race from Road America, but was on-site to help his team any way he could.

Oliver Askew filled in as driver for the #21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevy, leading two laps and ending the day in 12th position.

Following successful surgery in the days after the accident to repair a fractured clavicle, VeeKay recently drove in a simulator and has now recovered well enough to once again get behind the wheel of his car once again.

“First, I need to say thank you to the IndyCar medical staff, including Dr. Webber, who did my surgery,” said VeeKay in a statement.

“I have been working incredibly hard on my recovery, doing all kinds of treatment. I feel I will be right back at the level I was before.

“I sat in the car earlier this week to make sure I was comfortable and I was in the simulator yesterday, I have no pain and feel as good as ever.

“I am very excited to race this weekend at Mid-Ohio, especially after missing the last race at Road America.  I am more motivated than ever.”

VeeKay earned his maiden victory earlier this season at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, beating out the current points leader Alex Palou.

Even after missing the race in Road America, VeeKay still sits sixth in the overall points standings.
