Campos drafts in Nannini as Petecof replacement in F2

Matteo Nannini will return to Formula 2 action at this weekend’s Azerbaijan round, taking the place of Gianluca Petecof at Campos.

Petecof, who won last year’s Formula Regional European Championship, participated in the opening two events with Campos but revealed on social media that he has encountered budgetary limitations.

The Brazilian, formerly a member of Ferrari’s Driver Academy, failed to score a point across the opening two rounds.

Campos announced on Wednesday that his seat will be taken by Nannini.

Nannini initially took advantage of the new-for-2021 split Formula 2 and Formula 3 schedules by signing up to compete in both categories for HWA Racelab.

Nannini took part in Formula 2’s Bahrain opener, scoring a point, and then claimed a podium finish during the first round of the Formula 3 season in Spain.

After that event HWA Racelab outlined that Nannini was going to focus on his Formula 3 commitments and drafted in Williams Formula 1 reserve driver Jack Aitken for the most recent Formula 2 round in Monaco.

Aitken’s deal also covers the upcoming Baku round but Nannini will be back in action in the series with Campos.

“We feel sorry for Gianluca and the circumstances that prevented him from coming here but we hope to have him with us again in the future,” said Campos’ Sporting Director Adrian Campos-Suner Torres.

“Furthermore, we are pleased to have Matteo joins us for this event, and we are sure he will be competitive due to his huge potential as a racing driver.”

Campos holds eighth in the Teams’ standings following Ralph Boschung’s string of points finishes in Monaco.

Alpine junior Guanyu Zhou enters the third of eight planned rounds 16 points clear of Oscar Piastri at the head of the championship.
