Red Bull escapes penalty, retain grid positions

Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber will retain their grid positions of second and eighth after the FIA announced it is to take no further action over a suspected technical infringement.

Early on Sunday morning FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer reported both RB8 cars to the stewards for what he believed was an infringement of Article 5.5.3 which states that “the maximum accelerator pedal travel position must correspond to an engine torque demand equal to or greater than the maximum engine torque at the measured engine speed.

“The minimum accelerator pedal travel position must correspond to an engine torque demand equal to or lower than 0Nm.”

A statement from the stewards confirmed that no action would be taken after a meeting with Christian Horner, Adrian Newey and a representative from engine supplier Renault.

However, the note further revealed that their arguments as to why the cars were in fact legal weren’t accepted, but the wording of Article 5.5.3 isn’t presented in a clear manner and therefore Red Bull aren’t guilty of infringement.

“The Stewards received a report from the FIA Technical Delegate along with specific ECU data from Red Bull Racing Cars 1 and 2.

“The Stewards met with team representatives and the representative of the engine supplier Renault. While the Stewards do not accept all the arguments of the team, they however conclude that as the regulation is written, the map presented does not breach the text of Article 5.5.3 of the Formula One Technical Regulations and therefore decide to take no further action.”
