The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has outlined tentative plans for Formula 3 machinery to return to the streets of Macau later this year.
The Macau Grand Prix switched to using Formula 3 machinery in the 1980s and became recognised as an end-of-year standalone event for some of the best young talent, taking on the label of the FIA Formula 3 World Cup in 2016.
It utilised the Dallara F317 car, in line with the European Formula 3 Championship, through 2018 and from 2019 switched to the Dallara F3/19, following the relaunch of the FIA’s Formula 3 Championship.
The 10 teams who competed in the FIA Formula 3 championship took part and a similar approach was due to be taken for 2020 until the Covid-19 pandemic struck.
The Macau Grand Prix went ahead but did so instead as the final round of the Chinese Formula 4 championship, only featuring drivers from Macau, China and Hong Kong due to travel restrictions.
But it is hoped that Formula 3 machinery can return to the Guia Street Circuit later this year.
“The FIA Formula 3 World Cup has been confirmed on the International Sporting Calendar and is scheduled to take place on 21 November 2021 in Macau, China (subject to contract with the promoter),” the FIA said in a brief statement.
The FIA’s Formula 3 championship is due to take place across seven rounds this year, concluding alongside Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in late October.
