Marussia opts against running KERS in 2012

Marussia will not run the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (better known as KERS) in 2012, as they look to focus on aerodynamic efficiency.

The outfit made its debut in 2010 without the system and also opted not to run it in 2011, like its counterparts Team Lotus, now Caterham, and HRT.

Both Caterham and HRT have confirmed they will use KERS in 2012 leaving just Marussia without the system, which will likely lead to poor starts for the outfit.

Team principal John Booth confirmed the decision whilst speaking to Autosport.

“With the strides we are looking to make from this year, our focus has to be on aerodynamics first and foremost – as this will yield the greater gains.

“We are looking for seconds rather than tenths,” he added.

“Our wider view of KERS is that whilst we are supportive of the concept of regenerative braking as an environmental initiative, the current technology is incredibly expensive.

“It would represent a significant proportion of our operating cost, which is not in keeping with our original manifesto as a low-cost F1 team in an era of resource restriction.”
