Heikki Kovalainen says his future at Caterham, formerly Team Lotus, hangs on whether or not the outfit makes progress up the order in 2012.
The Finnish driver has often finished ‘best of the rest’ and has put in some impressive performances in a car which is at best a second slower than the mid-field pack.
Kovalainen admitted that he may reconsider his future at the Anglo-Malaysian outfit if the status quo remains the same.
“It depends on the car’s performance,” he told Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat. “I cannot give an exact probability of continuing [with Caterham] in a percentage, but if we go higher up the order next season, with the average development continuing, then the percentage will be high. Otherwise, the percentage will be small.”
The 30-year-old, who has previously driven for Renault and McLaren – where he took his one and only victory so far – says his aim remains to win the world championship, but whether that’s with Caterham, he couldn’t say.
“The world championship title is still my goal,” he added. “However I don’t know if it means with this team, or with another. Next year, it will not yet be possible to achieve, but after that, who knows.”
