Chip Ganassi Racing has confirmed that it will be returning to the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, fielding a single Cadillac DPi-VR program starting in 2021.

Rumours about Ganassi and Cadillac emerged last week, prior to IMSA’s Sebring finale, and have now been officially confirmed by the team.

“We can’t wait to get back to IMSA and fight for the overall win after several years competing in the GTLM class,” Chip Ganassi said. “Our relationship with General Motors has expanded from the NASCAR Cup Series and we couldn’t be happier. Partnering with Cadillac is a tremendous opportunity for our team and we want to start delivering for them in January at the Rolex 24 At Daytona.”

The team has a long and successful history in American endurance racing. Between 2006 and 2018, Chip Ganassi Racing took eight wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and finished in second place on three occasions.

Additionally, it captured 64 race wins and seven championships in IMSA and predecessor Grand-Am since stepping into sportscar racing in 2004.

“We are very excited to welcome Chip Ganassi Racing to the Cadillac competition family,” said Rory Harvey, Vice President at Cadillac. “Their success across many forms of racing, including sports cars, will be a great addition to our IMSA WeatherTech line-up.

Chip’s pedigree at winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona eight times as well as their championships in this form of racing gives Cadillac another stalwart team to compete for the 2021 IMSA DPi championship.”

Ganassi will likely be taking over Wayne Taylor Racing’s spot in the Cadillac programme after WTR announced the switch to Acura DPis for 2021.

Chip Ganassi Racing says that driver line-ups and partnership details ‘will be announced in the off-season in preparation for the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.’
