Nico Müller has defeated Rene Rast in a tight contest to win the Saturday race at Hockenheim, ensuring that the championship battle remains undecided with one race remaining.
Müller started the race behind title rival Rast but immediately seized the lead going into the first corner before the race was immediately halted by a safety car as Harrison Newey and Marco Wittmann both crashed out after contact with Robert Kubica.
After the restart, Rast took back the lead of the race and withstood pressure from Müller until the pitstops. Müller was the first of the pair to pit and when Rast pitted one lap later, he found himself behind Müller as well as Jamie Green and Robin Frijns.
Frijns dropped back as he had pitted very early on before Rast regained second as his Team Rosberg stablemate Green allowed him to pass. Rast managed to catch Müller and take the lead back shortly before a second safety car, caused by an on-track stoppage from Timo Glock.
After the restart, Müller managed to move back ahead of Rast at the hairpin and hold him off to win by less than a second, keeping his title hopes alive going into the last race of the season on Sunday.
Müller still has a mathematical chance of winning the title, but trails Rast headed into the final round.
Jamie Green completed an all-Audi podium ahead of Loic Duval and Mike Rockenfeller, with Jonathan Aberdein the best placed BMW.
The slim remaining hopes of a title upset for Robin Frijns were wiped out as the Dutchman finished seventh ahead of Robert Kubica. Philipp Eng and Sheldon van der Linde completed the top ten.
