Guanyu Zhou won for the first time in FIA Formula 2 in a Sprint Race that was shortened due to an enormous shunt involving Jack Aitken and Luca Ghiotto seven laps into the race.

The pair ran side-by-side through Turn 3 but the pair violently banged wheels, which sent them into the barriers at high speed.

Both drivers climbed out unharmed but due to the repairs required to the TecPro barriers, which were accentuated by a fire caused by Ghiotto’s car, the event did not restart.

On count-back, half-points were awarded after five laps, as less than 75 per cent of the race distance was completed.

Nikita Mazepin reeled in Zhou but the race was halted before he was able to challenge for the lead and thus took second while Mick Schumacher made another strong getaway to surge up the order, passing Aitken to claim third.

As the results were taken on countback Aitken and Ghiotto classified fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda, Callum Ilott and Dan Ticktum.

As a result, Schumacher continues to extend his lead in the championship to 22 points over second place Ilott, while Tsunoda jumps up to third and 44 points off the top.

There are only two rounds to go in this year’s F2 campaign, beginning with the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend in a couple of months time on 27-29 November.
