Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he exists to be the best and is not satisfied with simply “making up the numbers.”
Speaking to UK newspaper, The Sun, the McLaren driver said, “There are drivers that are content with being in F1 and just existing. Look at Rubens Barrichello and he seems content with where he is.
“Then there are people like me who only exist to be the best. If you aren’t busy trying to be the best then you’re not busy doing anything.”
These comments come just weeks after Hamilton insisted that McLaren need to do something to put him back in a championship-winning position, something he feels the Woking-based team are struggling with this season.
“At some stage, if it continues the way this is going then my patience will be seriously tested,” said Hamilton.
Speaking after Monza, in which we saw a very reserved and less-risky drive from Hamilton, the 26-year old insisted that he wasn’t “downbeat” and that he just wanted to get to the end of the race and walk away with some dignity.
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, commented on the more-reserved approach taken by the 2008 world champion, saying, “I told him that was a very disciplined drive, but I would like the old Lewis back.”
