Vesti wins at Mugello as three drivers set to contest title

Prema’s Frederik Vesti claimed his third victory of the campaign while results elsewhere set up a three-way fight for the title with just one race of the 2020 Formula 3 season remaining.

The Danish driver started the race third, behind pole-sitter Lirim Zendeli and Jake Hughes, but was able to pull off some brilliant overtakes with the pair into Turn 1 to eventually come out on top.

Hughes was second for HWA Racelab ahead of Theo Pourchiare, who had got by Zendeli on the final lap to keep himself in championship contention.

Enzo Fittipaldi was fifth, ahead of Logan Sargeant, with Alex Smolyar, David Beckmann and Sebastian Fernandez in seventh, eighth and ninth.

Liam Lawson finished 10th and on reverse-grid pole but is now out of the running for the title, while Beckmann and Vesti were also eliminated from contention.

Oscar Piastri started only 16th after a penalty and while he recovered he missed out on the points, taking 11th.

Mugello will host Sunday’s final race of the season and Prema team-mates Piastri and Sargeant will begin level on points, on 160, with the Australian ahead on countback of the number of runner-up positions.

Pourchaire remains in contention, on 151.

The final race of the campaign is lined up for a three-way title showdown on Sunday at 10:30 local time.
