Lirim Zendeli has taken pole position for the first FIA Formula 3 race of the Tuscan Grand Prix, which stages the final round of the series for this year.

The German was fifth after the first runs but pulled out a mega lap in the final minutes of the session to beat Logan Sargeant by 0.034 seconds to bag the four championship points.

Sargeant’s second position means he will start fifth on the grid, as he takes a three-place grid drop for his collision with Frederik Vesti in the last race at Monza.

Jake Hughes will therefore slot into second ahead of Vesti and Enzo Fittipaldi, who had achieved his best qualifying of the season.

Sargeant will be in front of Sebastian Fernandez, Theo Pourchaire, David Beckmann, Dennis Hauger and Alex Smolyar.

Oscar Piastri ended qualifying 11th but a five-place grid penalty for his coming together with Beckmann at Monza will see the championship leader begin the penultimate race of the campaign in 16th position.

Liam Lawson, who is one of the six mathematical contenders for the title, will line up 12th.

The first race for Formula 3 this weekend begins on Saturday morning at 09:25 BST.
