Phoenix Racing launch LMP program ahead of possible LMDh presence

Audi DTM squad Phoenix Racing will replace its DTM effort with an LMP program in 2021 in preparation for a possible jump to LMDh.

The German squad currently operates as an Audi factory team in DTM but will end its involvement at the end of the year as Audi curtails its DTM presence.

Instead, it will shift focus to prototype racing, beginning with an LMP2 entry into the 2021 Asian Le Mans Series.

“Motorsport moves extremely fast and you always need to be ready to evolve,” said team principal Ernst Moser. “Our LMP programme is part of our plan to remain a part of professional motorsport. And the Asian Le Mans Series is the perfect starting point.”

Along with an entry into the Asian Le Mans Series, the team has stated it is also looking into competing in the European Le Mans Series. Additionally, Phoenix Racing is also in talks for a potential second entry into the Asian series, which would see the team also field a car in LMP3.

Further down the road, Phoenix Racing is looking at establishing a presence in the new LMDh category. Moser has expressed interest in the new top class of endurance racing in the past, and says that it is aiming to become a factory LMDh squad with a yet to be determined manufacturer.

“Looking ahead we are also reviewing the possibility of establishing a presence in the LMDh class and becoming a manufacturer’s factory team again,” Moser continued.

“But for now, our focus is on finalising our programme for early 2021. We are currently in talks with partners and drivers to enable us to put together a strong package.”
