Lewis Hamilton isn’t going to bother thinking about the championship, he’s just going to drive the best he’s ever driven, according to the man himself.
The McLaren driver knows the gap to championship leader Sebastian Vettel is giant mountain to climb, and not worth thinking about at this stage. Rather, the 26-year-old aims to concentrate on ‘destroying’ the field in the final eight races.
“I’m not thinking about the championship because it can get very upsetting,” he said in Belgium on Thursday. “I’m not going to bother with it.
“What will be will be. What’s important is I drive the best I’ve ever driven.”
The 2007-champion admitted he wasn’t at his best in Hungary almost four weeks ago, a race which he led after a handful of laps, but a spin and poor strategy calls handed victory to his teammate.
“I wasn’t at the top of my game in the last race, and I want to make sure I’m at my best and the team are working towards being at their best so we can destroy the field.
“Any of the top six can win. I definitely feel all the teams have caught up. We are able to compete. They [Red Bull] have not won a race since Valencia. They are not unstoppable.
“We have generally gone quite well here and we should be very competitive this weekend and also for the next one.”
Hamilton won the Belgian GP last year after starting second behind Mark Webber, despite a mistake which saw him in the gravel – an area which has now been covered in tarmac run-off.
