Lirim Zendeli dominated Saturday morning’s FIA Formula 3 race at Spa-Francorchamps to take his maiden victory in the series.

The German fended off Theo Pourchaire, David Beckmann and Alex Smolyar at the start to pull out off DRS range and none of those behind were able to threaten him across the course of the 17-lap race.

Behind the top four Logan Sargeant looked on course to maintain his title lead by occupying fifth position.

But the American suffered an engine issue that cost him straight-line speed and he dropped to eighth by the finish.

Oscar Piastri was the main beneficiary as he moved into fifth, regaining the title lead, with Frederik Vesti and Olli Cladwell sixth and seventh respectively.

Liam Lawson’s title hopes took a blow as he was only ninth, with Richard Verschoor in 10th and on reverse-grid pole for the second race on Sunday morning.

The second race of the F3 weekend will begin at 09:45 local time on Sunday.
