Liuzzi hints at extended-HRT deal for 2012

Vitantonio Liuzzi has hinted at an extension to his one-year contract with the HRT team, an outfit he joined at the beginning of the 2011 season having been ousted from Force India.

The Italian has given the outfit its best result of the season, 13th at the Canadian Grand Prix, but with HRT exercising a pay-to-drive deal, his seat could be sold to the highest bidder if a new contract isn’t agreed.

That was the case with Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian replaced Narain Karthikeyan after Red Bull paid the outfit to run the 22-year-old.

Liuzzi though seems confident of another year at the Spanish team after hinting at an extension, though he says it’s still too early to announce anything firm.

“I was asked recently whether I am firming up my plans for next year yet, and for sure there have been a few talks but it is a bit too early to say anything at the moment,” he wrote in his ESPN column.

“People have come to chat with me, but everything is good with HRT and they are happy with me, so at the moment I would say everything is normal.

“HRT’s programme seems really interesting for the future and within the next two or three races we should know a little bit more about next year.”
