Alex Zanardi is showing “significant clinical improvements” according to the latest statement from the hospital treating the former Formula 1 driver and multiple Paralympic gold medalist.
Zanardi was involved in a hand-cycling accident two months ago and suffered life threatening injuries when he collided with a truck. He has since undergone four operations.
Initially the 53-year-old was treated at the Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital in Siena before being transferred to the Villa Beretta rehabilitation facility near Milan, but his condition quickly deteriorated. He was therefore moved to the San Raffaele Hospital, where his most recent surgery took place, to treat “late complications due to the primal head injury.”
There has since been little communication on Zanardi’s condition, but this week, exactly two months after the incident, the hospital released an official statement confirming “significant improvements”.
“After a period during which he was subjected to intensive care following hospitalisation on July 24 the patient responded with significant clinical improvements.
“For this reason, he is currently assisted and treated with semi-intensive care at the Neuroreanimation Unit, directed by Professor Luigi Beretta.”
