It is safe to say that 2020 has turned the world upside down but back in May Ferrari rocked the Formula 1 paddock when it announced it would not be offering a new contract to four-times World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
Three months and six races into the rescheduled F1 campaign and the lacklustre performances from the German coinciding with the clearly frosty atmosphere between himself and the team has prompted a potentially outrageous question.
Could Sebastian Vettel walk away before the season ends?
The once attractive prospect to try and rekindle the flames of yesteryear by linking a German World Champion with the scarlet red cars seemed so appealing back in 2015.
By 2017, it appeared as if the partnership was truly beginning to blossom as the wins started to come early in the season and the points tallied up, putting Vettel comfortably atop the standings. That title bid went awry but it was an encouraging year.
The following campaign initially yielded more promise but Vettel’s title bid collapsed mid-season, which included an agonising crash from the lead on home soil, and he finished adrift of rival Lewis Hamilton.
Once the 2019 season got underway, it appeared Vettel held the upper hand over new team-mate Charles Leclerc but the youngster soon got his feet under the table and it didn’t take long for Vettel to appear isolated in the team that once seemed to be his own.
Vettel profited from an off-set strategy to win in Singapore but that came amidst an increasingly tense atmosphere within the team, after miscommunications with Leclerc during qualifying in Italy and the race in Russia.
Tensions rose once again as Leclerc and Vettel collided at the Brazilian Grand Prix and the finger pointed at Vettel. But from there it looked like the writing was on the wall.
Ferrari and Vettel indicated pre-season that a new deal was a formality but a couple of months later the parties announced that they would go their separate ways.
Once the campaign got underway it was clear that Ferrari had dropped the ball with its lacklustre SF1000, which lacks aerodynamic ability as well as straight-line speed, following a private agreement with the FIA over its power unit.
Meanwhile, for all of Ferrari’s failings, Leclerc has scored two podiums and 45 points to just 16 for Vettel, who sits a lowly 12th in the standings.
Ferrari may always race in red, but the relationship with Vettel is appearing more blue as any comments made between either party seem to be devoid of any emotion, as well as what appears to be almost a reluctance to help the German improve his pace.
As Vettel returned to the pits having dropped out of the second part of qualifying at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Vettel told the team over the radio “Okay, that was all I had, it’s all that there was in this car, so I’ve tried. Thank you.”
His race engineer simply replied: “Understood, thanks.”
Would it put a stain on his career?
Vettel’s position in the record books will always be secure. He has taken 53 wins and four world titles – an astonishing achievement. But he is passionate about Formula 1 and wants to add to his legacy.
Talks over a potential deal with Racing Point – soon to be Aston Martin Racing for 2021 – are continuing, amid speculation that Vettel is in line to take the seat currently occupied by Sergio Perez.
It would also guarantee Vettel a rapid 2021 car – given the stability of the regulations – and also keep him in the championship, aligned with a team that has a close relationship with current powerhouse Mercedes.
Who would replace Vettel at such short notice?
There is the outside possibility of all parties hurrying up their 2021 positions – though this would involve a level of negotiation and agreement that is improbable.
Ferrari has Alfa Romeo racer Antonio Giovinazzi as its nominated reserve driver; the Italian has been part of the team since 2017 and has tested its Formula 1 machinery in previous years.
Alfa Romeo would then ostensibly call up its reserve Robert Kubica to join incumbent Kimi Raikkonen.
What is the likelihood of it all happening?
This is the biggest unknown. But should the already fractious aura continue to fester between Vettel and Ferrari then the chances of an early split are likely to increase.
The two parties are going through the motions and each race that passes is one to tick off as December’s Abu Dhabi finale draws closer.
But could they bring that relationship to an end even earlier?
“But he is passionate about Formula 1 and wants to add to his legacy.”
No he doesn’t. He made it absolutely clear in his recent interview with Martin Brundle that he doesn’t care what people think about him when he finishes in Formula One. He said that once a driver retires he is quickly forgotten and people move on to the next in line, and that is how he believes the sport should be, always looking forwards, not back. He said he still wants to achieve more, if he can, but only to enjoy it in the present, not for any purpose of cementing a place in history.
However, the main thrust of this piece is correct. Ferrari don’t want Vettel any more, and he no longer wants to be there. The best solution would be to swap over Vettel and Giovinazzi for the rest of the season. Both would surely jump at the opportunity. Giovinazzi would be keen to make a good impression with Ferrari, and, if it is to be Vettel’s last few months in Formula One, he would enjoy sharing the time with his best mate in the paddock, Kimi Raikkonen. Alfa Romeo would certainly benefit more by having Vettel in their car than Bob Kubica, who demonstrated so tragically last year that he isn’t physically up to the job since his awful accident while rallying.

Did you see the driver interviews? After Lewis got the team to paint the car black, have black overalls, black team clothing, Bottas was dressed in all black, and Lewis wore all white. Wtf? I really support the End Racism logo and I’m a huge fan of the black car. But Lewis has to always do something different to stand out. But to get everyone on the team to embrace black, including Bottas complaining about hot black overalls in the race, and then turn up in all white team clothes. What a FU to the team.

The Haas deal was that they use all the listed Ferrari parts, and they use the Ferrari wind tunnel and their head of aero had to be an aero guy from Ferrari. So it’s not surprising that they tried hard when they had less power than Ferrari. So the Ferrari engine cheating has caused the Ferrari engine development to stall, and their aero department to not try too hard. Last year at Spa a Ferrari led in every practice session, qualifying session and every lap of the race. This year fighting for P12. It’s clear just how much cheating they did, and how little cheating power they gave to the other Ferrari teams. And yet Sbinotto is still there. He should have been sacked for that level of cheating plus laziness.
Maybe Ferrari can ask Honda to supply them with an engine in 2021.

Actually since no one else is using the Renault engine next year, other than Renault, maybe Ferrari can ask them for an engine. A bit of wet, Lewis hits Max, Albon does a bad qualifying, Bottas can’t pass Ricciardo after changing to the wrong tires, and Alonso does one of his killer starts. It’s possible. I little bit of hope can go a long way.

Makes me wonder of the Ferrari Wind Tunnel isn’t feeding them BS again. I mean the real WT, not Binotto (living wind tunnel).
My brother helped design and build that wind tunnel. It was state of the art. It won 6 WDCs for Ferrari. But it’s 20 years old now. He went from Ferrari to BAR and helped to build a wind tunnel for Honda, that is now the Mercedes wind tunnel. That has won 7 WDCs, 1 for Brawn and 6 for Mercedes. Ferrari need a new wind tunnel, and instead of hiring Vettel they could have used the money to built one. Instead they used the Sauber wind tunnel, which is awesome, while they did an upgrade on their own wind tunnel. They now use their own upgraded wind tunnel, which is never going to be as good as building a new wind tunnel from scratch, or as good as using the Sauber wind tunnel.

Yeah but Checo had the Covid holiday. Stroll has some focus issues. Checo had that at McLaren but improved. I think Checo is a top B grade driver in F1. Better than Bottas, Hulk, probably as good as Sainz, Albon, Dan, Lando, Russell. With Max, Lewis, Leclerc, Alonso at a higher level.
Russell is a bit under rated IMO. I think he was ~ 18 or 20-0 outqualy-ing team mates. He should beat pay drivers, but every now & again, his team mate should get the setup right. What sux is Russell is still in Merc purgatory. If I were Tracing Point, I would take Russell over sBinnala any day, all day. I just have a strong feeling Russell will be more of the top tier than say Cock-on. I think that is why Merc refused to put GR next to Hammy.
We’ll see what Smiiey can do w/Merc PU next year & Seidl running the techies. Would love Ren-Oh-No! to get rid of Big-Tool, spend a mint on top engineers & allow Alonso to fight for the F1.5 WDC.
Russell was signed on a three year deal with Williams and they refused to release him. It was Claire being (as Sim Dane says) a c*nt. He would have had the Mercedes drive this year if it wasn’t for Claire. But the only reason I did not put George up higher was that Williams have favoured him over Robert, and Latifi is a pure pay driver. So George has not had the true test to know how good he is. He did a great job in the sim racing but that is not enough to know how good he really is.
I thought GR’s gaps to the pay drivers was much better than Wehrlein’s. Just a strong feeling he is better / faster / mentally less $h1t than Bottas.
Now Claire’s just a memory. Fingers crossed the new owners are much less $h1t.

Yeah I was joking about Bottas. He is like a Labrador. Faithful, a little slow. We have three Portuguese hunting dogs, they are like mini greyhounds. Fast, always chasing squirrels and foxes (which pass through our garden regularly). We used to have a greyhound. Lewis is like a greyhound. Not super smart, high maintenance, but so bloody fast. Bottas is like a Labrador, family friendly, trustworthy, loyal, never complains. But never going to beat that greyhound.

It was hilarious watching the post FP 1,2 press questions, where Lewis was trying to downplay his enormous advantage. If Merc were not in F1 there would be a great battle between four teams for the WDC, with the pendulum of performance swinging each race.

Reading up on the fuel cheat (Craig Scarbs). From the FIA response (encrypted Fuel Flow Meter that teams now CANNOT read) – it looks like Ferrari was able to read the old FIA FFM signal, synchronize the fuel pump pulse such that when the FFM took a measurement, it was always at a lower point than the max – allowing Ferrari to flow more. Clever sausages!
The electronic disruption concept is interesting. They would have to be careful in that – if they shifted the sensor reading interval, they might accidentally shift it to where the real peak was. Still clever, no question. If anyone knows about e-Noise – it would be Ferrari.

Saw that one, too. I thought Ferrari would need a coil to generate the magnetic fields needed to disturb the sensor. I’ll bet Ferrari was told to move their e-kit a min distance from the new encrypted sensor – just in case they were pushing the sensor with an EM field. I wish it was easy to search through Disqus to conversations from last year when idiots kept talking about how Ferrari didn’t cheat the fuel flow, and they just adjusted their car to have more downforce. Then look at this year’s results. But those idiots don’t come here any more to comment. If they did I’d have a good laugh. Never have I seen cheating that was stopped in F1 cause such a big change in performance. They must have been cheating the fuel flow by a massive amount.
What surprises me is Ferrari’s car is so $h1t. They should have been able to trim DF-drag once they lost power. Doubt their Front-Rear centre of pressure changed. They were relatively slow in the first few races, but have dropped off a tonne.
Other teams are moving fwd, but I suspect Ferrari is going backward. Their concept has gone the wrong way.
Sainz will have an easy time getting more points than $V’s pathetic 2020 total.
They built a car based on having an illegal engine. The other Ferrari teams built their cars based on what Ferrari gave them in terms of engine power. Therefore Ferrari put in too much downforce relative to drag.
How hard is it to take off the same % DF off front & rear and still keep balance? Feat should be rather easy for a team with competent Aero.
It’s not about the balance. It is about the relationship between downforce and drag. When you have a very powerful engine then it is very easy for you to add downforce because the engine will compensate for the drag. So you lazily add downforce. You achieve the downforce that you want but you have a high drag car. Then your cheating fuel flow engine compensates for the high drag.
Once you lose that engine power you have a car that has high downforce but also high drag. Other teams that didn’t have the same power put more time and money into creating a high downforce low drag car. That is what Alfa Romeo did. Remember they have the very best F1 wind tunnel in the world. So once the engine power became equal between the Alfa Romeo and the Ferrari, it was the Alfa Romeo that had the same downforce and less drag.
Having a super powerful engine made the Ferrari aero team lazy. The problem is that there are extreme limits on the number of hours that an F1 wind tunnel can be used. So Ferrari can’t just throw resources at solving their past laziness in the aero department. They are going to be behind the rest of the Ferrari powered teams for at least a year while they design proper low drag aero.
