Guenther leads the way in FP1 on Wednesday in Berlin

Maximilian Guenther topped the timesheets in FP1 for the penultimate race of the 2019/20 Formula E season, leading the way for BMW i Andretti Motorsport.

The young German racer currently sits in third in the Drivers’ Championship and took his second victory in the fully-electric series on Saturday after a close fight with Robin Frijns.

Racing on the new configuration of the Berlin Tempelhof Circuit which showcases a revised final sector, the 22-year-old produced a 1:16.251s lap to head the 45-minute session, leading Oliver Rowland.

The Nissan e.dams driver was only 0.009s shy of the fastest lap while Rene Rast took third as the lead Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver, only 0.055s adrift of the second-placed Briton.

Frijns clocked the fourth fastest lap for Envision Virgin Racing and edged ahead of newly crowned champion Antonio Felix da Costa who completed the top five to front DS Techeetah’s efforts. Team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne wound up in 14th.

Season 3 champion Lucas di Grassi followed da Costa in sixth ahead of Sam bird who was seventh. Sebastien Buemi, meanwhile, was eighth.

The Swiss pilot was followed by Mitch Evans who registered the ninth quickest time to emerge as the lead Jaguar Racing driver. The Kiwi is joined by Tom Blomqvist for the final two races of the season, who replaces James Calado who holds commitments in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Edoardo Mortara completed the top 10 in the Mercedes-powered Venturi ahead of Nyck de Vries who was 11th in the works Silver Arrow 01 car.
