James Calado set for 60-place grid drop in Berlin

Jaguar Racing’s James Calado will serve a 60-place grid penalty for the first part of Formula E’s six-race season finale at the Berlin Tempelhof Circuit.

The 31-year-old – who will leave the British marque at the end of the present campaign – experienced a difficult start to his week in Berlin after encountering a software issue leading up to FP1.

This led to a precautionary powertrain change to his I-TYPE 4 challenger and while his Jaguar team successfully performed this swap within the 45-minute session, further issues were encountered when Calado ground to a halt after leaving the garage for the first time.

After stopping in Turn 3, FP1 was red flagged with 10-minutes remaining and was not resumed after the car was found to be in an unsafe state.

Further changes were then made as a battery change was carried out over the course of FP2, meaning that the Briton failed to complete a single lap of the reverse configuration venue at speed over the course of practice.

With these changes, Jaguar Racing have breached Article 28.4 of 2019/2020 FIA Formula E Championship Sporting Regulations which means that Calado will serve a 60-place grid penalty for changing the MGU, Inverter and battery pack.

On Formula E’s 24-car grid, this demotion cannot be fully served, meaning that further penalties will follow in the 45-minute + 1 lap race later today.

Holding commitments to AF Corse in the FIA World Endurance Championship which races at Spa next weekend, it is unknown if Calado will compete in the final two races of Season 6, with recently announced reserve driver Tom Blomqvist expected to return to Formula E in his place to partner Mitch Evans.
