PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports has signed Patrick Kelly and IndyCar driver Spencer Pigot to its LMP2 line-up for the 2020 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship.

Kelly, 52, joins the team as the mandatory bronze-rated driver in the line-up. The Minnesota native made his debut with the team in 2019, taking victory at Road America alongside Matt McMurry. The win for Kelly and McMurry was one of the four wins that guided PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports to the LMP2 crown.

“After a long time out of a race car I’m very excited to return,” said Kelly. “I am looking forward to a great season.”

Pigot subbing for Trummer

Spencer Pigot, meanwhile, has been brought into the team as a replacement for Simon Trummer. Trummer was originally supposed to be part of the line-up as he also competed in the opening round in Daytona in January. Commitments to the Algarve Pro Racing European Le Mans Series campaign and travel issues coming from having to go back and forth between Europe and the United States have rendered the Swiss driver unable to be part of the IMSA campaign.

Pigot, 29, will be making his IMSA LMP2 debut. He has raced previously with Mazda’s prototype program from 2016 to 2018, picking up podiums in the Six Hours of the Glen and Petit Le Mans. He most recently competed in the 2019 Petit Le Mans with Juncos Racing.

“I’m really looking forward to joining PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports this weekend in Sebring,” said Pigot. “I’ve seen their name in many different series over the years winning races and championships so it will be great to be part of the team.

“It will be a challenging event with how condensed the schedule is and how hot it will be, we aren’t used to running at Sebring this time of year. I’m excited to be co-driving with Patrick and together with the rest of the team hopefully we can have a strong race.”

“The whole team is very anxious to be getting back to racing, as we’ve been busy testing with a variety of different cars but it’s just not the same as a competition,” added Team Principal Bobby Oergel. “I know Patrick Kelly has been working very hard to prepare and get himself in race trim, which will be very important with the events schedules being very tight.

We are happy to welcome Spencer Pigot to the family and feel very strong about his abilities to help the program in many ways. Although we haven’t competed together yet I feel like he will be a great addition to the team.”
