Renault-backed Christian Lundgaard claimed his maiden FIA Formula 2 victory in the second Sprint Race of the season in Austria.

Lundgaard, 18, started from second on the grid but kept in touch with polesitter Dan Ticktum on the opening lap and pressed home his advantage thereafter.

Lundgaard made the race-winning move into Turn 3 and was never troubled again to take his first win, and the first of the season for ART Grand Prix.

Ticktum briefly faced pressure from Lundgaard’s ART team-mate Marcus Armstrong but the Williams F1 tester held firm to take the runner-up spot.

Armstrong came home in third place but only after profiting when fellow Ferrari protégé Mick Schumacher was forced to retire from the podium-paying positions.

Schumacher had passed Armstrong for third but the fire extinguisher inside his cockpit went off and the Prema driver pulled into the pits to call it a day.

UNI-Virtuosi duo Guan Yu Zhou and Callum Ilott were fourth and fifth respectively, while Jack Aitken, Sean Gelael and Nikita Mazepin rounded out the top eight, the ex-Force India tester earning new-for-2020 team Hitech its first point in the series.

Championship leader Robert Shwartzman had his points advantage cut to just five over Lundgaard as he spun out of proceedings at the start, while runner-up in the Feature Race Yuki Tsuonda retired from the points due to a mechanical issue.

Formula 2’s next round will take place at the Hungaroring from July 17 to 19.
