McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton says he doesn’t blame team-mate Jenson Button for their incident which saw the 2008-world champion retire from the race.
The two made contact as Hamilton attempted to pass Button, but an ever decreasing gap left the number three driver in the wall with a puncture and front-wing damage.
“I got a better run out of the final chicane,” said Hamilton, “I felt that I was at least half-way alongside him.
“I don’t know if he could see me or not, but he just kept coming over and over.”
However, he didn’t put any blame on his team-mate saying the visibility meant he couldn’t see him coming up alongside.
He also revealed that he didn’t need to retire after the damage was less severe than feared, but the team prompted him to pull over.
“It was only the tyre that was busted, so I put the diff lock on and tried to drive it back to the garage, but the team told me to retire.
“I thought the suspension was gone, that’s what they told me, turns out it wasn’t though.”
The race was later red-flagged after a heavy rain storm waterlogged the track on lap 25 of 70.
