Jimmie Johnson looked to finish second to Brad Keselowski in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday night. But when race results were made official, Johnson was 40th [last].

Johnson’s car failed post-race inspection at Charlotte, nullifying the runner-up finish, because the rear alignment on the #48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was outside NASCAR’s allowable range.

“We think something must’ve broken, but won’t know until we get it back to the shop,” Johnson’s crew chief Cliff Daniels said, as quoted by FOX News. “Tough news after a strong night.”

Johnson’s disqualification moved third-place finisher Chase Elliott, one of Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammates, up to second. Elliott was leading the race before pitting during a caution that sent the race into overtime. On newer tires, Elliott raced from the back half of the top-20 to third in the two green-flag laps before the checkered flag.
