A fundraising effort launched by a group of Formula 1 drivers has reached $71,000 after the conclusion of the final Race For The World event on Sunday.
On-track action has yet to begin in 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and several drivers have taken to online gaming, streaming their efforts on Twitch.
A group of six Formula 1 drivers – Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon, Lando Norris, Antonio Giovinazzi, George Russell and Nicholas Latifi – organised a series that took place over three days.
Friday’s third and final event, using the F1 2019 platform, concluded with Ferrari driver Leclerc finishing atop the standings, ahead of Luca Albon, younger brother of Red Bull racer Alex.
Leclerc won the second of two races on Friday, using the Red Bull Ring, after a last-lap battle against real-life rival Albon, with the pair almost replicating the real fight for the win in 2019.
Albon crossed the line first but Leclerc inherited the win after a five-second penalty for the Red Bull driver.
Mercedes reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne won the opening race of the day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The six F1 racers, along with debutant Carlos Sainz Jr., will return to action for Sunday’s official Virtual Chinese Grand Prix, organised by Formula 1.
The money will be donated to the World Health Organisation’s ongoing efforts to fight the COVID-19 coronavirus.
