Seven-time NASCAR champion Johnson to take part in IndyCar test

NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson hangs out in the pits during NTT Indycar Series testing at Circuit of The Americas on February 11, 2020

Seven-time NASCAR cup series champion Jimmie Johnson has confirmed that he will get to run an IndyCar test session courtesy of Arrow McLaren SP.

Johnson revealed on Twitter that he was at McLaren’s shop in Indianapolis getting a seat fitting completed ahead of the outing, which is due to take place next month at Barber Motorsports Park.

This season is Johnson’s last in the NASCAR cup series.  Over the course of 20 years in the series he has competed in over 650 races, amassed 83 wins, and jointly holds the record for championship wins with seven to his name.

He is also a four-time winner of the Brickyard 400, the annual stock car event held at the infamous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In 2018, Johnson participated in a ride-swap with Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, with each driver taking each other’s car around Bahrain International Circuit.  That experience, like this upcoming test, was arranged by McLaren and helped to boost the relationship between the two.

“I don’t think I’ll stop smiling for months,” said an ecstatic Johnson after driving the McLaren MP4-28.

“That was the most epic experience I’ve ever had in motorsports, in my life.”

Rumors of a potential test run with IndyCar kicked up recently when, after expressing interest in driving another open-wheel car, Johnson was spotted in the Arrow McLaren SP garage during the IndyCar open test at Circuit of the Americas last month.

At this point it has not been determined if this test session will lead to a race drive for Johnson in the future.
