Ryan Newman was released from Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Wednesday after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a last-lap crash in Monday’s Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.
“Ryan Newman has been treated and released from Halifax Medical Center,” read a tweet from Roush Fenway Racing [@RoushFenway].
The tweet also included a photo of Newman leaving the hospital with his two daughters.
Newman was leading the race on the final lap, but after a push from Ryan Blaney’s car, Newman’s car hit the wall, got airborne, flipped and landed on its roof. As other cars were collected in the wreck, Corey LaJoie’s car hit Newman’s overturned car in the driver-side window.
Safety personnel turned Newman’s car upright and removed him for transport to the nearby Halifax Medical Center. The first update of Newman’s condition came about two hours after the incident and stated he was in serious condition, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
Newman was credited with a ninth-place finish. Denny Hamlin, who was challenging Newman for the lead at the time of the crash, won his second-consecutive Daytona 500 and the third of his career.
After the race, Newman and LaJoie’s cars were taken to the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, N.C., for study.
