Sauber’s disqualification from the Australian Grand-Prix could be down to as little as 3mm worth of Carbon Fibre, the team has revealed.
Under the regulations set by the FIA, the concave radius of the rear wing on all cars must be no less than 100mm – the Sauber team’s wings were in breach of this regulation and this resulted in the disqualification of the team and the loss of valuable championship points.
“The radius was 95 or 97 millimetres. We’re devastated,” Peter Sauber told Swiss newspaper, Blick.
“We have two different types of wing, and one of them seems not to have been precisely controlled during the construction. But for sure there was no (performance) advantage,” he continued.
Speaking on behalf of the sport’s governing body, the FIA, Johnny Herbert said, “Unfortunately, the rules were clear and we had no choice but to disqualify them.”
The Hinwell-based team have lodged an appeal notice with the FIA.
