Marc Marquez takes Sepang win to secure title match point heading to Qatar

Marc Marquez delivered a masterclass at Sepang to claim victory in the MotoGP Malaysian GP, securing a crucial title match point heading into Qatar while propelling Ducati to the top of the Constructors’ Championship.

This may well mark the moment Aprilia’s title hopes unravelled. Despite boasting what many considered the best machine on the grid for much of the campaign, the Noale factory has lost its grip on both the Riders’ and Constructors’ standings, undone by a relentless Ducati charge.

The catalyst, once again, was Marc Marquez, whose victory at Sepang secured him his first championship match point for the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix (November 6 – 8).

Despite making clear his disapproval of holding the round amidst the region’s geopolitical conflict, Marquez heads to Lusail on the brink of history: securing the title there would yield an extraordinary tenth World Championship, officially moving past his rival Valentino Rossi’s benchmark of nine world titles. To clinch his tenth World Championship at the Qatar Grand Prix, Marc Marquez must outscore Marco Bezzecchi by 8 points and Jorge Martín by 30 points.

Pedro Acosta claims victory in dramatic Malaysian MotoGP sprint

Marquez secured his 80th premier-class win, his first at Sepang since 2018, finishing 4.172 seconds clear of Pedro Acosta, with polesitter Alex Marquez completing the podium. This marked the first top-three finish without an Aprilia rider on the box since San Marino, as well as an all-Spanish podium sweep. In the process, Ducati overturned a four-point deficit to leave Malaysia with an eight-point lead over Aprilia in the Constructors’ chase.

The factory Ducati rider executed a flawless holeshot to grab the lead into Turn 1, holding firm at the head of the field across the 20-lap distance despite an early challenge from his brother. Alex Marquez was eventually overhauled by Acosta, who put in a charging ride from third.

Further back, Ai Ogura sat behind Marco Bezzecchi for several laps before finally carving his way past the Aprilia rider with three laps remaining, but too late to challenge the top 3.

In a tense on-track exchange, the Japanese rider put any lingering team order rumours to rest, making contact with Bezzecchi in his charge for fourth. Bezzecchi then surrendered a further position to Enea Bastianini on the final lap to cross the line in sixth, in a costly blow to his championship ambitions.

Luca Marini, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Brad Binder, and Franco Morbidelli rounded out the top 10, while Fabio Quartararo recovered to P11 from P18, followed by Alex Rins, Francesco Bagnaia, Maverick Vinales, and Iker Lecuona to complete the top 15 scoring positions.

Operating an impressive return to action after missing four rounds, Joan Mir saw his progress undone when he tumbled down the order midway through the race, hampered by a recurrence of the vision difficulties and exhaustion that had sidelined him in recent weeks. Johann Zarco suffered a similar fate, dropping back from a strong seventh position due to an apparent technical issue.

The Malaysian GP was also marked by early drama, with Augusto Fernandez crashing out at Turn 14, followed later on in the race by Diogo Moreira at Turn 15. Although the Brazilian rejoined despite missing bodywork, he was ultimately forced to retire in the pit lane.
