What’s at stake for MotoGP at the Japanese GP in Motegi?

As the Asian flyaways kick off with the 26th edition of the Japanese Grand Prix, the 2026 MotoGP title fight enters a critical phase at Motegi. Leading the standings with 306 points, Jorge Martín holds a narrow 12-point advantage over Marc Márquez as five rounds remain.

The MotoGP championship battle is on

Coming off a Sprint victory and a P2 finish at the Austrian GP, Martín faces a fresh challenge on Japanese soil. The championship leader has never raced the Aprilia RS-GP around the stop-and-go Motegi circuit across a full Grand Prix weekend, having missed last year’s event through injury after provoking a Saturday incident with his teammate Marco Bezzecchi in the Turn 1 braking zone. An incident that kept him on the bench until the very last round of the 2025 campaign.

Despite the lack of track time on the Noale machine, Motegi has historically been a strong hunting ground for the Spaniard. Martín completed a clean sweep in 2023 with victory in both the Sprint and the main race, alongside podium finishes in 2022 (P3) and 2024 (P2).

Márquez chasing records on conquered ground

Just 12 points adrift, 2025 World Champion Marc Márquez arrives in familiar territory, aiming to reclaim the championship lead. The Cervera native is the most successful active rider at Motegi, holding five wins across all classes, including three premier-class victories (2016, 2018, 2019).

A Sunday victory in Motegi would break a tie, as Márquez currently shares the premier-class record of three wins with Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, and Loris Capirossi. A fourth GP victory would put him in a league of his own.

The Japanese venue carries huge emotional weight for Márquez, as the circuit where he secured his nonuple world title, matching Valentino Rossi’s tally of nine championships. While his 2026 campaign has required more resilience than his dominant 2025 title run, history favours the factory Ducati rider. Whenever Márquez has held the championship lead at any point in a season, he has gone on to win the crown. Having led the standings from San Marino through to Austria, he knows the title remains well within reach.

Further back, Marco Bezzecchi remains in contention, trailing Martín by 42 points. However, the top three title rivals are all battling physical limitations as the gruelling flyaways begin, with Jorge Martín managing right arm pump, Marc Márquez continuing to deal with his previously injured right arm, and Marco Bezzecchi riding through pain from a left knee injury.

Behind the lead trio, Pedro Acosta arrives full of momentum. Fresh off a stunning maiden MotoGP victory at KTM’s home race in Austria, the rookie sensation has surged to P4 in the standings, leapfrogging Fabio Di Giannantonio and is now sitting 72 points off the top.

Maverick Viñales returns to racing

Elsewhere in the standings, pending Thursday’s medical checks, Maverick Viñales is set to make his return with Tech3 for the closing stages of his final season with the French squad. The Spaniard has been out of action since the German GP following shoulder surgery, with test rider Pol Espargaró filling in.
