Appeal grants Aiden Moffat Race 1 victory at BTCC Silverstone

Having followed LKQ Power Maxed teammate Aiden Moffat to the line, Mikey Doble appeared to take victory following a five-second penalty at Silverstone.

In a race where Ash Sutton could have claimed the British Touring Car Championship, the NAPA Racing UK man started typically well by climbing from P14 to P9 on the first lap. While, in another example of Restart Racing’s 2026 misfortune, Dan Lloyd would fall from P6 to P17 as he started with the wrong engine map.

As a further boost to Sutton, Tom Ingram would fall victim to a domino-collision at Brooklands on lap 2, being spun and falling to P22.

The LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing pair of Moffat and Doble would both start well, despite Doble momentarily falling from P1 to P3 on the opening tour. Having taken the lead, the Scot would set the then-fastest lap on lap 5 as he started to pull away.

After being criticised by Jason Plato overnight, Dan Rowbottom would also recover from a poor Race to Pole result of P17 to hold P10 by lap 6.

Despite the pace of the Audis ahead, Josh Cook posted a quali-like 56.956 on lap 10 for the fastest lap, while running P6.

Moffat’s charging drive was scuppered with a few to go, however, as he was awarded a five-second penalty for track limits violations. Yet, that would not be the end of his Race 1 story.

Most of the battling for the remainder of the 22-lap outing centred around the pair of Restart Racing Hyundais: Lloyd trying to climb back through the field and Chris Smiley climbing up from P22.

By the flag, Lloyd had managed to recover himself to P14, with Ingram also managing to recover to P13 just ahead. But, Smiley’s 11-place gain marked the standout performance of the race, including denying Sutton the P11 he needed for the title on the final lap.

At the front, it was Doble who would appear to inherit victory from Moffat for his second in two weekends, with Tom Chilton and Cook also jumping up into the podium as a result. Moffat came home P4, with Daryl De Leon, Gordon Shedden, Charles Rainford, Adam Morgan, Árón Taylor-Smith, and Rowbottom completing the top 10.

Smiley scored P11, with Sutton, Ingram, Lloyd, and Lewis Selby rounding out the points. BTCC-newbie Osamu Kawashima finished two laps behind in P22, with an issue forcing Dan Cammish into a similar position.

The results mean that Dexter Patterson has been crowned victor of the Jack Sears Trophy, after a stellar season. While, shortly after the race, Moffat’s penalty was rescinded due to him being forced off-track in taking evasive action – giving Power Maxed Racing their first BTCC 1-2.

As the decision document explains, Moffat was shown leniency because of having to take action to avoid Kawashima’s Hyundai, which had a mechanical issue and slowed dramatically.
