The NTT IndyCar Series has announced that multiple drivers will receive grid penalties for the first race of this weekend’s double-header.
The first race on the Milwaukee Mile takes place Saturday afternoon, and no less than five drivers will drop down the grid on account of excessive engine usage.
Alex Palou is the most consequential driver on the list, as he currently sits atop the points standings and is hoping to wrap up a record fourth consecutive title this weekend.
His #10 Chip Ganassi Racing entry has been fitted with a new Honda engine this weekend, placing him over the season-long limit imposed by the series.
He is joined by two Team Penske drivers Scott McLaughlin and David Malukas, who each take on an additional Chevy power plant this weekend.
Similarly, both Juncos Hollinger Racing entries took an additional engine. Sting Ray Robb and Rinus VeeKay will both line up considerably lower than they qualify when they take the green flag on Saturday.
All five drivers will move down nine positions on the grid from where they qualify, which is the standard amount for penalties assessed at an oval event.
Penalties will not apply for the second race of the double-header weekend.
