Romain Grosjean nearly took victory in Sunday’s inaugural IndyCar race from Markham.
The Frenchman took the lead with 20 laps remaining in his Dale Coyne Racing entry, but was hunted down by Marcus Ericsson in the closing laps.
After the #28 Andretti Honda blasted past on fresh tires with just four laps to go, Grosjean knew he had no chance of keeping up that pace.
He admitted after crossing the line in second that he had let himself think that this was his day to finally get a win after five seasons and five previous runner-up finishes in IndyCar.
“I cried a little,” said Grosjean. “I’m not going to lie. But control what you can control. I think that comes from Andre Agassi, the book read.
“Did everything I could. I don’t know how the strategy worked for the #28. I guess the short pit lane helped them, then the fact a lot of people had to save fuel and run out of space.
“Obviously I haven’t watched the race. Very happy with my team and my performance.”
Grosjean then reminisced about how it has been since his GP2 days in 2011 since he has won his a race of any sort, and joked that he needed to run some kart races to reset that record.
“Again, I did everything I could. I went to Formula 1 for 10 years. Formula 1, if you don’t have the car, you don’t win a race.
“Yes, it’s a long time to have not won a race. I don’t think I forgot how to win a race. I just think I didn’t get the chance to do that, so… We’ll try. We’ll keep racing.
“Maybe I should do a go-kart race, l have more chances. Or a cycling race.”
