Tom Ingram: ‘Issues in every race’ at Thruxton forced ‘trying’ BTCC weekend

Having fallen to P9 at the start of the British Touring Car Championship‘s Race 1 at Thruxton, a win in Race 3 is a good return for Tom Ingram.

The reigning Drivers’ Champion suffered a deflating start to Sunday’s racing, but did manage to pull himself to P5 by the first chequered flag of the day.

Race 2 went better at first, before a 10-second time penalty for track limits saw Ingram shifted from P2 to P5. Ingram had also been in the wars in that outing, making contact with Josh Cook at the Club chicane.

However, the Team VERTU man’s fortune would shift as his pacy Hyundai i30N Fastback took a convincing victory in a typically-chaotic Race 3. In doing so, he defied a five-second time penalty for reversing on the grid.

“We’ve been noisy this weekend, which I didn’t really want to be,” Ingram told BTCC media.

“Yeah, obviously issues in every single race, I think, with various dramas or caught up in chaos or my own ****-ups.

“It’s been a fairly trying weekend, I think.

“After that second race, I did feel fairly flat, so I’m pleased that we’ve been able to get something out of it.

“We’ll get out of this weekend, see it as hopefully a bit of a learning weekend, and come back stronger the next race.”

Thruxton’s speedbowl hosted a down-and-up weekend for Ingram’s Team VERTU squad. Ricky Collard retired from the Race to Pole, while Tom Chilton suffered reliability issues and a shunt put Nic Hamilton out of contention in the same race.

Despite that, Collard would go on to finish Sunday with a flourish, Chilton scored solidly, and Hamilton enjoyed a great battle for points to end his raceday.
