The British Touring Car Championship returns after a six-week break at Thruxton, with plenty of new developments as teams rallied ahead of the second half of the season.

Championship leader Ash Sutton will be gagging to get running underway on Saturday, with his lead standing at an imperious 48 points.

The lead leaves Tom Ingram needing to improve his season average of 43 points per-round if he is to close the gap, while hoping the NAPA Racing UK Ford suffers as-yet unseen performance issues.

A similar story unfolds atop the Manufacturers’/Constructors’ and Team Standings, where the four-strong group of Fords clearly stand above as the best collective in the paddock.

Elsewhere, the Independent Drivers’ Standings are as tight as can be – led by Mikey Doble as just 24 points separate him and Chris Smiley in P6. In the Independent Teams, Doble’s LKQ Power Maxed Racing team sit top by just one point, trailed by WSR, Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport, and Restart Racing.

Dexter Patterson leads the Jack Sears Trophy on 195 points, with James Dorlin just eight points behind.

New drivers top the bill for WSR and Speedworks Corolla

Much of the season’s driver speculation has surrounded WSR’s potential for a third entry. Instead of Jake Hill, as rumoured, BTCC newcomer Lewis Gilbert will complete the season in the BMW.

The move marks the first time that Gilbert will compete in closed-wheel machinery, having previously won karting championships and making GB3 in 2026 for Arden Motorsport.

While Gilbert did have the opportunity to test at Snetterton last week, he is making the significant step into WSR’s BMW relatively cold.

“I’m thrilled to make my touring car debut with WSR and to join the BTCC – a series I’ve watched and loved for a long time,” Gilbert told BTCC media.

“I’m only half a season into my car-racing career and already fortunate to be in a position to move into the BTCC, which has been a long-term aim since I started karting.”

Gilbert is not the only surprise alteration to the grid that started 2026: Speedworks has shifted Max Buxton to a reserve role, replacing him with Ryan Bensley.

A key sponsor pulled out, forcing Buxton – who had struggled for pace in 2026 – to give up his full-time seat.

The misfortune opened the door for Bensley, who previously drove in the BTCC for Team VERTU at Snetterton in 2025.

Elsewhere, Bensley has impressed in an eclectic UK-based career that includes the Civic Cup, TCR UK, and Britcar.

“It’s a dream to drive for Speedworks Corolla Racing,” Bensley proudly told BTCC media.

“Competing in the BTCC has been my life goal, but to also drive alongside Josh Cook – who has been so instrumental in my career to date, gives me the best platform to learn quickly ensuring we have the best chance to succeed as a team this year and next.”

Nick Halstead will also make a surprise BTCC return at Knockhill, piloting a Power Maxed Racing Audi.

BTCC and ITV agree new multi-year TV deal

TOCA and ITV have agreed a new multi-year TV deal, continuing the coverage that fans will be familiar with.

ITV4 and ITVX will continue broadcasting live tin-top racing and its support series, delivering seven hours of coverage from every race day. ITV will broadcast all race days live, stream Saturday qualifying live on YouTube, and air highlights across ITV4, X, and ITV1, alongside dedicated support race highlights on ITV4.

“I’m extremely pleased and proud to have finalised our new contract with the ITV Network, thus continuing our excellent and continually expansive broadcast partnership for the BTCC and its support championships into an incredible 27th year,” Alan Gow commented.

“This new contract underlines my unwavering commitment to continue to keep the BTCC as freely accessible to as many people as possible… rather than for it to be hidden behind a paywall.”
