F3 Preview: The championship battle continues in Hungary

Formula 3 heads to Hungary as the title fight heats up

Formula 3 heads to Hungary for Round 7 of the season, and what is the final race weekend before the summer break.

The Championship fight is coming to a head as the two rivals of Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater are separated by just one point. The rest of the field sits just under 40 points adrift.

In the nature of Formula 3, the order is ever-changing, and Theophile Nael comes to Budapest 38 points adrift. Yet, with a few good results or misfortune for his rivals, the order may very well shift.

From third to 11th, just 20 points separate the order.

The face of the championship battle has changed over the last few rounds. Leaving Silverstone, Ugochukwu led the field by a healthy 18 points. However, that gap came down swiftly as Ugochukwu faced his worst weekend of the season.

Both Championship contenders collided in the Sprint Race, which resulted in a pointless endeavour for both. However, in the Feature Race, Slater took the chequered flag in third while Ugochukwu ended the race in 20th, his worst result of the season so far.

With Slater finding consistency in the most recent rounds, the momentum lies with him heading into the summer break.

Weather forecast and track characteristics

The Hungaroring is known widely as “Monaco without the walls”. It gains the nickname from the winding, twisting corners which reward driver precision. It has very few straights and the nature of the corners makes overtaking difficult.

Yet the nature of the track isn’t the only aspect that could potentially affect the order.

The 2026 F3 season has yet to see a race in wet conditions. However, that may be subject to change in Budapest.

Currently, the forecast reads potential rainfall on Sunday morning. In the middle of the Feature Race. There is a chance that tyre strategy comes into play during the race.

Last year, rain fell initially but stopped as the race went on. Though the rain stopped, the track did not dry enough to cause a tyre change. Therefore, it did not impact the teams’ decisions.

Without necessary pit stops, aspects like rain play a significant role in how the order turns out, adding to the chaos that is already so prevalent in the series.

With a grid full of a mix of veterans and rookies, rain would no doubt bring an unpredictable element to the weekend, which would be sure to change the shape of the championship into summer break.
