IndyCar hit the track at Road America for a second time Saturday morning to complete another practice session on the lengthy course.
With speeds ramping up towards the end, Pato O’Ward set the fastest time of all 25 drivers.
His lap was 1:45.4159 in the #5 Arrow McLaren Chevy, putting his freshly changed engine to good use.
Marcus Armstrong, who topped Friday’s times, was second quick and showed that it was not just the softer tires that gave him an advantage. He will be a threat for the rest of the weekend.
Scott McLaughlin was third as the first Team Penske representative, but his team-mate David Malukas was just a hair slower and set the fourth best time.
Rookie Caio Collet was quick for the second day running and set the fifth best time.
The ever-present champion Alex Palou was sixth quick, although he was well down the order earlier in the session.
There were multiple interruptions to the session, with the first red flag being brought out for Will Power.
The veteran went a little wide through the Thunder Valley section at Turn 13, and he bounced over the grass all the way to Turn 14.
Power did not hit the wall, but he did take out a roadside advertisement which blew onto the track and necessitated a cleanup.
The second red flag was for Louis Foster, who coasted to a stop out on track after just seven laps complete.
It seemed as if his Honda engine was the culprit as multiple Honda engineers were seen discussing the incident with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team afterwards.
There is precious little time for the team to figure out a cause, and potentially change the engine, because knockout qualifying is on deck just a couple hours away at 1:35 PM central time.
