After taking his maiden Formula 3 victory in the Monaco Sprint Race, Hiyu Yamakoshi’s car was under investigation, and he was subsequently disqualified.
The Stewards noted the number 14 Car for allegedly having the left push rod mounted on the right-hand side of the car and the right on the left. This was a potential breach of Articles 1.5.3 and 17.1 of the FIA F3 Technical Regulations.
Van Amersfoort argued that the regulations did not specify that the LH and RH rods had to be on the specific left and right sides as defined in the spare parts catalogue.
Equally, the left and right differed depending on whether the team were going by the driver’s left and right, or the mechanics. Neither of which was outlined within the regulations.
Despite this, the Stewards decided that it should be taken to mean the driver’s left and right, and that if there was any confusion, teams had the opportunity to ask.
Furthermore, with the wording of the regulations, the stewards made it clear they didn’t believe the regulations were ambiguous, saying “the abbreviations LH and RH, which are used extensively throughout the catalogue, and are so commonplace within the world at large as to not reasonably require express definition within the sophisticated world of Formula 3.”
Formal decision
The decision went as such: “The stewards determine that the front push rod LH – CPL must be installed on the left-hand side of the car and that the front push rod RH – CPL must be installed on the right-hand side of the car.
“The stewards determine that Articles 1.5.3 and 17.1 of FIA Formula 3 Technical Regulations have therefore been breached and that the standard penalty of a disqualification needs to be applied for such an infringement.
“Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 5 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.”
The disqualification moves Gerrard Xie into the Monaco victory, with Bruno Del Pino moving to second and Pedro Clerot to third.
