Following Sunday’s qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, two cars failed inspection and have been disqualified.

Caio Collet and Jack Harvey have had their qualifying times removed, and they will be positioned at the back of the grid.

Collet advanced to the Top 12 qualifying round, and originally earned the 10th grid position.

Harvey set the 29th best time in the first round, and was set to line up on the 10th row before the penalty.

Both cars were found to have violated 14.12.1.1 and 14.12.1.6, which state that the Energy Management System “must be used as supplied by Dallara and approved by IndyCar” and “EMS covers may only be attached with the supplied hardware and Helicopter Tape.”

“IndyCar Officiating discovered modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and cover-to-A-arm mounting points with unapproved hardware,” read the announcement.

The advantage appears to have been an aerodynamic one related to the suspension mounting points.

The two violations come from different teams, with AJ Foyt Racing and Dreyer and Reinbold Racing seemingly independently violating the same policy.

In addition to being moved to the back of the field, Collet will lose the bonus points he earned from qualifying inside the Top 12.

Drivers that qualified 11th or lower will be moved forward to fill the holes in the grid, with Collet and Harvey taking up the final two positions on the 11th row next Sunday.
