Ever since Fernando Alonso 'retired' from Formula 1, he has insisted that he could return, although it's thought to be unlikely.
The Spaniard has set his sights on securing motorsports unofficial 'Triple Crown' by winning the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans and the Indy 500. The latter remains his only barrier to becoming only the second driver to achieve the feat.
As well as that, Alonso is embarking on a Dakar Rally bid with Toyota next year, but asked if returning to F1 is still on the cards, Alonso admitted he hasn't ruled it out but set out some requirements that might tempt him.
"I need to figure out a couple of different challenges away from Formula 1. They're not yet finished, like the Indy 500 and other stuff," Alonso told Sky Sports.
"In 2021, with the new regulations, it's a good mix, [it'll be] a different Formula 1 than we see now.
"The reasons why I left Formula 1 are still present with the domination of one team and races too predictable, but in 2021 there's a chance it could change and could be a good opportunity [to return]."
F1 is introducing a major rules shake-up in 2021 aimed at levelling the playing field to ensure no one team dominates and that at least half the field has a shot at winning a race, increasing the potential for unpredictable results, which is an important factor for Alonso.
"Any other sport is a little more unpredictable than Formula 1, MotoGP is more unpredictable, Indy is more unpredictable.
"I think the new regulations are made for that, to level the field and to have more options.
"The only bad thing is the calendar, 22 races is non-stop. I'm getting old!"
