Joan Mir will miss this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring through an injury picked up as a result of a 300km/h crash during Monday’s post-Brno test.
Mir crashed his GSX-RR machine through Turn 1 at roughly 300km/h, the Spaniard required trackside medical assistance shortly after the incident before being transported to the circuit medical centre.
He was subsequently diagnosed with a pulmonary contusion and moved to Brno’s local hospital so he could be kept under observation. Despite not suffering any other injuries, Suzuki have decided to allow Mir to rest in order to be fully fit for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in a fortnight’s time.
Mir’s lungs are still partially inflamed due to the contusion, meaning it would be a huge risk to force him to compete with such little time before the next races of the championship.
Alex Rins will therefore compete as the sole Suzuki this weekend due to the lateness of the decision.
Suzuki team manager Davide Brivio explained the Japanese squad’s decision to leave Mir out this weekend.
“It’s a pity that Joan cannot take part in this next round in Austria, but the most important thing is that he recovers in the proper way,” said Brivio.
“His condition is getting better and better and fortunately there is nothing more serious, he just needs time to recover after the crash.
“With the GP of Austria so close after Brno, back-to-back, it is just too difficult for him to recover in time. He needs to be careful, and we want him to come back only when he is fully recovered. We wish him all the best and we will be waiting for him.”
