Pirelli outline Hungarian Grand Prix strategy options

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli expects a one-stop strategy to be favoured by teams and drivers for the Hungarian Grand Prix in the event of a dry race.

The notoriously tight and twisty Hungaroring circuit can be tough on tyres, but this can be heavily affected by the heat and track temperature on any given day.

The Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari drivers will start on Medium tyres while the remainder of those inside the top 10 will start on Softs, in event of a dry race.

Those drivers in the lower half of the grid have free choice of starting compound.

Pirelli believes the quickest strategy for the 70-lap grand prix is to run a Soft/Medium tyre approach with one stint of 24-30 laps on the Soft tyre compound and seeing out the remainder of the race on the Hard tyres.

The second-fastest approach would be to start on the Medium tyre and do 30-35 laps, with a second stint of 35-40 laps on the Soft tyre to the end of the race.

A third 'slightly slower' strategy would be another one-stopper with an opening stint of the soft tyre for 22-28 laps, then switch over to the Hard tyres for the remainder of the race.

The slowest strategy is a two-stopper with an opening stint of the soft compound for 16-20 laps, then two more stints on the medium tyre for 25-27 laps each.

There currently is no chance of rain for the race, however, small showers have been bubbling up around the circuit and could cause a shift in strategy for the teams at any time.
