Nicholas Latifi stormed to a dominant victory at the Hungaroring, beating Nyck de Vries to the chequered flag to take his sixth FIA Formula 2 Championship win.

Starting from third on the grid, the Canadian secured a strong getaway, clearing UNI-Virtuosi's Luca Ghiotto to move into second, advancing his way through the podium positions.

Nyck de Vries, who started from pole, only briefly held the lead, with a lock-up into Turn 1 allowing Latifi to move into first place.

As the fastest driver on the track, Latifi opened up an early advantage over the trailing Dutchman who pitted at the end of lap 6, attempting to undercut the leader.

Maintaining his pace out in front, Latifi pitted on lap 8, most importantly rejoining ahead of de Vries on younger tyres to maintain the net lead of the race as the Medium-starting alternate strategy runners filtered to the front of the field.

This allowed MP Motorsport's Jordan King to move into first place as the Briton attempted to extend his opening stint on the more durable Medium compound tyre to run on the faster softs in the final sprint to the chequered flag.

King swapped his Mediums for Softs on lap 27, rejoining in ninth place while Latifi once again moved into first.

Remaining out in front, Latifi was unchallenged by de Vries who followed the Canadian behind while King's late-race charge was halted following the deployment of a safety car with two laps to go when F2 returnee Ralph Boschung ground to a halt following an engine failure.

Latifi took the chequered flag at the end of lap 37 to secure his fourth win of the season for DAMS while de Vries took second, unable to challenge. Jack Aitken stood on the final step of the podium for Campos Racing.

Sergio Sette Camara took fourth place in the second DAMS entry while Nobuharu Matsushita completed the top five for Carlin.

Luca Ghiotto took sixth in the final classification, with the Italian racer receiving a five-second time penalty post-race for a Virtual Safety Car infringement while King was handed the same penalty for the same offence, finishing in seventh.

Prema Racing's Mick Schumacher secured eighth place to start from pole position for the reverse grid Race 2 on Sunday and was followed by Guanyu Zhou and Callum Ilott who completed the top 10.
