Sebastian Vettel says he and Ferrari can regard his podium finish at the German Grand Prix as a “small victory” in the wake of a difficult run of events.
Ferrari has yet to pick up a win this season having had a handful of opportunities slip through its grasp, while at other events it has not been on the same level as Mercedes’ W10.
In Germany Vettel started from the rear of the 20-car grid after an intercooler problem in Q1 left him unable to set a competitive lap time.
But in a chaotic race that was influenced by changeable weather conditions Vettel carved his way through the pack to finish as runner-up to Max Verstappen.
“I think with the race we had from starting last, I think we can certainly be very happy recovering,” he said.
“It was a very tough race, easy to lose focus and momentum but we kept it throughout so I’m very happy.
“It’s certainly a tough time for us at Ferrari with days like [qualifying], we have things we have to sort out and do better, but I think in this period it’s very important that we keep the morale and the support in the team.
“From the inside that is happening, from the outside, I hope that is happening as well.
“I know the Tifosi are behind us but sometimes the headline can shift either way so it’s important that we keep the support because I think things are moving, we are working very hard.
“When it comes to passion, we put a lot of effort and a lot of hours in, people are very determined and impatient as everyone else to get the results finally. But it will take a little while.
“We know what we have to improve and that’s what we are working on, but in the meantime, I hope that people are a bit patient and give us patience and time. So in that regard it feels like a small victory.”
