Unwell Lewis Hamilton cancelling schedule in recovery bid

World Champion Lewis Hamilton says he is cancelling his plans for the next few days in a bid to recover to full health, after suffering from illness in Germany.

Hamilton felt under the weather throughout the weekend at Hockenheim and classified only ninth after a series of setbacks in a thrilling wet/dry race.

“I’ve cancelled everything I have for the next few days so I’m going home probably just to sleep the next few days and try and get over this bug,” he said.

“It’s not really improving massively but hopefully over the next couple of days it will.

“I don’t think being in the car is any good and just health is so important so I’ll just try and make sure I’m as healthy as I can be for the next race.”

Hamilton controlled the early stages of the rain-hit German Grand Prix but his race began to unravel when he went off at the penultimate turn during the Safety Car phase.

Hamilton’s lengthy pit stop for repairs dropped him to fifth while a penalty for not staying to the right side of the bollard cost him further time.

A high-speed spin through Turn 1 was another setback but Hamilton still classified ninth, in the wake of Alfa Romeo’s post-race penalty, meaning he extended his title advantage.

“It’s massively disappointing and upsetting for all of us to be leaving a grand prix [where] I was eight seconds in the lead at one point,” he said.

“And had it all under control and you are constantly just hoping… Things are going to be thrown at you the whole time in conditions like this.

“But I think it was like one domino after another and like snakes and ladders and I kept hitting the snakes.

“But the thing is we win and lose together. It just shows you how easy it is to get a weekend wrong and the processes wrong but we stay united and we pull together and we regroup.

“We were still doing pretty awesome until the domino effect so we need to take the positives from this weekend and leave all the negatives out. It’s only one race, and we keep moving forwards.”
