Jack Aitken storms to victory in Silverstone F2 Sprint Race

Campos Racing's Jack Aitken stormed to the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race win at Silverstone after a superb drive from fourth on the grid.

The British-Korean driver got one of the best starts and launched himself into third place by Turn 1, as pole-sitter Callum Ilott got away poorly and went to battle with championship leader Nyck De Vries in the early stages of the race.

Aitken eventually got a run on De Vries and put in a stunning pass around the outside of Brooklands to take second, putting him in prime place to chase after Carlin's Louis Deletraz.

Over the next 10 laps, Aitken chased down Deletraz and put in another move to pass the Swiss driver, this time with a stunning dive up the inside of Brooklands.

Deletraz would have to settle for second as once Aitken got by, the Campos racer sped off into the distance.

De Vries lost ground to the leaders and had to spend the majority of the race trying to fend off Ilott in the Sauber Junior Team by Charouz car, but the pair would cross the line third and fourth respectively.

DAMS driver Nicholas Latifi took fifth, while Mick Schumacher claimed sixth as he moved up from his 11th place grid spot very quickly in the race.

The German got locked into a battle with UNI-Virtuosi's Guanyu Zhou and Latifi midway through the race which saw the Prema driver take to the grass on the exit of Stowe and get slightly airborne as he rejoined the circuit.

Schumacher would then also tussle with Zhou three laps from the end as the pair both made mistakes into the Vale chicane and went off the road. Schumacher remained in position while the Chinese driver had allowed Carlin's Nobuharu Matsushita to get by for seventh and was unable to get back past.

Zhou would have to settle for the last points-paying position in eighth.

MP Motorsport's Jordan King finished ninth ahead of the second Sauber Junior Team by Charouz entry of Juan Manual Correa, who rounded out the top 10.

Campos Racing's Arjun Maini would be handed a drive-through penalty after his clash with Trident's Giuliano Alesi on the second lap.

Formula 2 returns to action in Budapest, Hungary on August 2-4.
