Nick Cassidy revealed he was unsure he would be able to hold on to take victory in the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix, doubting it “until the end”.

The Kiwi made history by taking the Citroen brand’s first E-Prix win at a sold-out Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, holding off the challenge of Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara.

It was another strategic masterclass from the Kiwi, who rose from 13th on the grid to take victory, in what was a performance that typified Cassidy’s nous in such racing conditions.

It was a monumental moment for the Citroen team, which Cassidy celebrated by conveying his “privilege” at being part.

“Winning here, with Citroën, is a dream coming true. I’m happy for the whole team, it’s a privilege to be part of this project”, he told Formula E microphones at the end of his second race with the team.

Cassidy added: “I didn’t think until the last lap that we were OK. I was happy with the P4 today, starting P13, my radio was very much like ‘let’s secure a good result’ but my engineer has always been making the right calls. This one is very much for him as it is for me and the whole team. It’s the team, the car, the package and the strategy that enabled us to win that race – you can’t win this race with a bad car.”

Cassidy reveals Mexico win comes at folically-related cost

Cassidy’s victory and Vergne’s eighth-place finish took Citroen to 44 points in the overall standings, allowing the team to take the lead in the team standings and Cassidy to finish ahead in the drivers’ championship.

It’s a perfect start to the season for Cassidy, who fought for the title multiple times but never came out on top. Could Season 12 be the redemption season for him?

Cassidy revealed also the win came at a cost, having made a bet with team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne before the race.

“I made a deal with JEV on Thursday that if I won I’d shave my head. There’s a statistic that whoever wins this race wins the championship so I wasn’t giving that one up – if we win the championship I’ll shave my head anyway!”
