Maverick Vinales put Yamaha on top in FP2 for the Dutch TT at Assen, setting a blistering lap 0.180 faster than FP1 pace setter Fabio Quartararo.
Vinales left it late to take the top spot, heading out with a pair of soft compound Michelin tires to demote Andrea Dovizioso to second with a time nearly three-tenths faster.
He then shaved off another few tenths on his very next lap to go over six-tenths clear at the top, while the other riders also ventured out for a final fast lap attempt on new softs.
Quartararo was frustrated to not usurp Vinales lap, but was still able to secure second just ahead of Danilo Petrucci who repeated his third place from this morning’s session.
Dovizioso eventually slipped to fourth just behind his Ducati team-mate, while Alex Rins managed to keep Suzuki in the top five.
Andrea Iannone set a stunning time early on, following Marc Marquez on his fastest lap, to initially stand atop the leader board before he was relegated to second by Dovizioso.
The Aprilia man remained second for most of the remainder of the session, but was pushed down to sixth after he failed to set a lap on his new soft’s due to a crash at Turn 9 on his final attempt.
His earlier time kept him ahead of Marquez though, who was seventh, while Suzuki rookie Joan Mir managed a fine eighth fastest time.
Valentino Rossi improved on this morning’s to take ninth just ahead of LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow.
Johann Zarco was the only other rider to suffer a tumble during the session, albeit a big one. He went down at the same high-speed Turn 7 that Jorge Lorenzo crashed at in FP1, but luckily the KTM pilot walked away without injury.
The same couldn't be said for Lorenzo however, as it was confirmed early in FP2 that he would miss the remainder of the weekend thanks to a fracture in his back picked up in the incident.
