Chip Ganassi Racing's Felix Rosenqvist has claimed his first pole position in IndyCar in a mixed up qualifying session ahead of the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

After a tricky start to the season due to the chilly conditions, the Swede was able to put in his best lap towards the end of the Firestone Fast-Six and get the best out the #10 NTT Data Ganassi-Honda to snatch the pole by just 0.02s.

Team-mate and reigning five-time series champion Scott Dixon continued to showcase the speed his #9 PNC Bank car had through the practice sessions to complete the front-row for CGR.

Meyer Shank Racing's Jack Harvey will lead the second row in third-place, starting from his best ever qualifying position after making it into the Firestone Fast-Six for the first time in his career.

The British driver initially held the top spot before both CGR cars snatched it away in the dying seconds of the session.

Colton Herta had been fast throughout both practice sessions but had to settle for fourth-place in the #88 Harding Steinbrenner entry. In the Fast 12, he was the only driver to post a sub 1:08, but couldn't replicate that speed in the final session.

Ed Jones also put on a solid performance to put the #20 Ed Carpenter Racing entry in the Firestone Fast-Six, the British-Emirati driver will share the third row with 2018 Indy GP pole-sitter and race winner Will Power, the fastest of the Team Penske drivers on what was a difficult afternoon for the Captain's outfit.

Graham Rahal will line-up in seventh on the grid with  2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud in eighth in the #22 Maynard's Penske on the fourth-row.

Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Marcus Ericsson continues to show improvement after his move across from Formula 1, the Swede managed ninth on the grid and will have four-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais for company rounding out the top 10.

It was a tough day for both Andretti Autosport and Team Penske as both outfit struggled to get their cars towards the front of the grid. Alexander Rossi, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter Reay failed to make it out of the first and second groups of Q1 – as did Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves for Penske.

Rain is forecast for Saturday's race which will get underway at 4pm local time.
