Silverstone keeps MotoGP through to 2021

Silverstone has secured a new one-year deal with Dorna Sports to continue hosting MotoGP through 2021, while also confirming the full circuit will be resurfaced in June.

Silverstone was at the centre of controversy last year when the British Grand Prix had to be cancelled due to the circuit's new asphalt being unable to drain the heavy rain which fell throughout Sunday.

An enquiry was launched to determine what went wrong with the asphalt – circuit work carried out by Aggregate Industries – though the findings of which have yet to be made public.

Following the cancellation of racing at Silverstone, Dorna insisted the track surface had to be redone if MotoGP was to return to Northamptonshire venue.

Earlier this year Silverstone announced fresh resurfacing work would be laid prior to the Formula 1 race in July, and has now confirmed Tarmac and Jarno Zafelli's Studio Dromo – the company behind recent tracks works at Sepang, Misano and Mugello – will carry out the work.

“Getting to this point has involved a lot of work by the staff at Silverstone but throughout it all we have been completely focused on making sure we make the right decisions to guarantee the future of our most important events with Formula One and MotoGP,” said Silverstone Managing Director Stuart Pringle.

“We have a globally-renowned company working on the surfacing of the track and we have one of the most respected circuit designers in Jarno Zaffelli working as an expert advisor to Silverstone during the works.

“The extension to the MotoGP contract is excellent news for all of us at Silverstone and allows us to plan long-term for the future development of MotoGP, and all two-wheel action, at our circuit.

“We look forward to making the MotoGP weekend the best motorcycling event in the UK biking calendar.”

The 2019 edition of the British MotoGP Grand Prix is scheduled to take place over the bank holiday weekend of August 23-25.

Motorsport Week also understands the circuit has agreed a new deal to continue hosting Formula 1 races through 2022.
